The propeller nuts aim to prevent the propeller from falling off. It ensures that the prop is seated tightly against the taper. The prop nuts' job is to maintain the propeller's snug fit against the shaft taper. Prop nuts don't take much strain during usual operation because the power through the engine continues the propeller pressing on the shaft. A prop that is hand-tightened or otherwise too loose could cause it to smash back into the nut with enormous force and possibly rip the cotter pin that holds it in place, thus resulting in the loss of the prop.
