Description
The alternator is a generator that distributes electricity while also charging the battery. All automobiles with a regular internal combustion engine, except some hybrid versions will have an alternator. The engine is the first step in the process of producing electricity. Alternators are powered by a serpentine belt that runs from the engine's crankshaft to the alternator though older vehicles may have a separate pulley from the crankshaft to the alternator. The mechanical energy generated by the belt movement spins the alternator's rotor at high speeds within the stator. The magnets around the rotor are arranged to create a magnetic field as they travel over the copper wiring in the stator.
